Symbiotic Relationship

Symbiosis is a relationship between two organisms where at least one of the organisms benefit. To the right, is a picture of example of the symbiosis relationships. The picture is of a hairy rope growing on a tree. The symbiotic relationship between the tree and the hairy rope is mutualism.

Mutualism is the relationship where both organisms benefit from relationship. In this case, the hair rope benefits because it gets a place to grow. The tree benefits because it gets protection from having the rope grow on the tree. Therefor both of the organisms benefit.

Biotic Factor

These are the daisies outside my house. They are biotic limiting factors. They are limiting factors because they give bees food and if the daisies die off, there are many bees that would not be able to pollinate. Then any birds that eat the bees will have less food, and then they will die off. Then the bigger birds that eat the smaller birds die off from less food. It is a whole chain reaction, if one limiting factor that gives one animal food, dies.

Lit. Poems

"Red"

Blue is the color of good,
Brown is the color of dangerous eyes;
Yellow is the hue of the boy's hair,
Red is the blood for which the girl cries.

Yellow is the color of the dripping sun,
White is the clouds outside that are free;
Black is the spider on the flag,
Red is the color Death will see.

Brown is the color of the biggest potato,
Orange was the color of the burning book found;
White was the snowman melting in the basement,
Red was the half eaten apple thrown on the ground.

Unit Field Trip to Adventure Aquarium

Last week we went to the Adventure Aquarium. We saw cnidarians in a tank that showed of the Medusa's bio-luminescence. We tiger sharks which we were able to touch. The best part about the whole trip was seeing the biggest sea turtle and seeing the hammer-head shark. The sea turtle swam back and forth by the glass window, like it was trying to talk to the students (or trying to get out.) The hammer-head was interesting because it swam away from all the students when the kids ran up to the glass. Maybe the shark does not like all the flashes from the cameras. I also loved the little sea horses. They swayed back and forth on the sea weed and I don't think that there was a breeze blowing through the tank.The shark tunnel was so much fun! Having the sharks swim over you with their teeth out can make someone a little claustrophobic. There were man different types of sharks swimming all around in the tank. There was one shark that had a nose that looked like a sword. That was interesting to see. Eating lunch was fun. We got to see the sea gulls outside and we saw a bunch of different birds. I saw the sky line Philly for the first time, which was great. All in all it was a great field trip and the fact that I adore animals just made the trip even better.

The Top 10 Reasons Why the Earth Will Not End in 2012

It's on the news. It's in the movies. Something is posted about it on almost EVERY website. But none of us know if it is really going to happen or not. Yes...the famous, "The world is going to end in 2012!!!" Yea...no. on Discovery Science, you can read a Top 10 list, telling you ten reasons why the earth will not end in 2012. The writer of this certain story listed the top ten stories told about how the world will end in 2012 and then told us what experts are saying. The top ten reasons with what the experts are saying are as followed:

10. Changes in the Sun's magnetic field will lead to powerful flares. This is were the sun will heat up so much that it reaches it's peak temperature. This is supposedly an 11-year cycle and this time, it is supposed to be hotter than ever and blowtorch the earth.
-This may sound scary, but the sun isn't gonna randomly get hot and scorch the earth into nothing.The largest flare recorded was in November in 2003. And, yea! We are still here!

9. The Earth's magnetic field will reverse.
- No! The last one on these babies happened over 800,00 years ago! Obviously, the cavemen survived!

8. The Earth's rotation axis will tip.
-The experts are saying, no way! The Earth is too heavy. Something around the size of Mars would have to hit the Earth for the Earth's axis to tip.

7. An alignment of Jupiter and Saturn will use gravity and perturb Earth.
- The scientists are saying, no way no how can Jupiter can pull the earth 400 Million miles away from it's original spot.

6. The Sun will align with the galactic equator on the winter solstice.
-So...? There is no big deal if the Sun does this, it is not going to change anything.

5. The black hole in the galactic center will affect us.
- The Milky Way black hole is not going to affect the galactic disk of which we live people!

4. An asteroid will smash into the Earth.
-(Haven't heard that before!) To tell you the truth, an asteroid could come hit us tomorrow. There is no planning these things on a certain date.

3. The rogue planet Nibiru will swing by Earth.
- That is not a real planet, therefore, it can't hit Earth!

2. Supernovae of hypernovae will irradiate Earth.
- There are no stars close enough to the Earth to affect us.

1. A cloud of negative energy engulfs the solar system.
- Experts say this sounds like Star Trek. So No! Nothing is going to happen!

What I think:

Personally, I think that all of us dying in 2012 is a crud! Nothing is going to happen to us and if it does, there is nothing much we can do about it. All of these stories that are made up about 2012 are by people who have nothing better to do or by people who think they know everything. Whether you believe in the disaster of 2012 or not, just go with the flow of life!

Dolphins Are People Too!! <3

What Scientists are Saying:
www.livescience.com has an article about dolphins and how they have developed in to animals who are smarter than us as humans think they are. Scientists believe that dolphins have become so smart they think the dolphins should be treated as "non-human persons." Researchers dispute that is it terrible to let the dolphins be accidentally fished or to kill them for food. Intelligent animals that are the smartest creatures next to humans, should not be treated as such. (So true!!)

How Smart Dolphins Are:

Dolphins are super smart creatures. They have even given themselves names. When they squeak, they are introducing themselves to others around them. Due to their limited sight, they use calls to find each other and to introduce themselves. Dolphins pick their name as an infant and keep it throughout their whole lives.(Yet another reason how smart they are and how they are like humans.) When they look in a mirror, they know it is them they are looking at. Dolphins use metacognition!( Or thinking about thinking.) Dolphins also use tools, such as sponges. They take the sponges are swim in circles to stir up the sea bottom to find prey. Cool!

What I think:

Dolphins, regardless of how they are killed, should not be killed. Such animals are too smart to be harmed.I do love the new nickname that scientists have given to the dolphins. A dolphin using metacognition is insane! I never thought in a million years that any animal other than humans could use metacognition. Over all, this article was a very cool and interesting to read.
